Emma from Kelly Tarltons

We had a visit last week from Emma from Kelly Tarltons.  Emma shared about the turtle protection, care and release program at Kelly Tarltons.  We learnt about the turtles that are to be released on the Karikari peninsula this month for the second time and everyone enjoyed touching the real turtle shell, shark skin, penguin feathers and learning about the tracking systems they use.  Hopefully we will be able to meet up with Emma again at Kelly Tarltons when we travel to Auckland later in the year.

Maitai Bay trip

Another great day was had last Thursday outside of the classroom learning about the moana and the different ways that groups can work together to look after these important spaces.  We traveled to Maitai Bay with Te Hapua school to listen to the korero about the rahui that has been placed at Maitai Bay for the next 2 years. Thank you to Whetu for sharing with us the reasons for the rahui and the research that is currently occuring within this space.  This was very interesting and relevant learning for all adults present as well as our tamariki. We also enjoyed exploring and observing Maitai Bay by sketching, snorkeling and writing what we could see, smell, hear, taste, feel.

Trip to Henderson Bay

We took a trip to explore and observe Henderson Bay with Te Hapua school today.  Fun learning day had by all identifying and observing the different species found within the different zonations.  This learning links to our moana topic for  this term and grows our capabilities as kaitiaki.  We are reminded again of how lucky we are to have such a beautiful resource on our doorstep.
